1. Contracting – A Quick Checklist

 Before meeting your consultant, we advise that you make copies of the following documents and bring them into your first consultation:

An up to date CV –  Remember, as a Contractor a client is paying for your skills. They need to be clear and obvious.

Personal Identification – the obvious ones are best, ie, Passport, Drivers Licence.
As a contractor you need to set up a Limited Company. In essence, you will be self-employed and are duty bound to organise your own tax returns. Recruiters can offer practical advice on this and introduce you to a reliable and reputable firm of accountants who specialize in payment to contractors. Alternatively, you may know an accountant that can work with you. Shop around for the best deal and beware of hidden costs.

2. How do I calculate my rate of pay?

Rates of Pay: Tip – When calculating your rate of pay multiplies your daily rate by 230 days. Don’t be caught by surprise by calculating your daily rate by 365 days. We only work 230 days when you take into consideration weekends, holidays, bank holidays and personal days. Eg: €250.00 per day is equal to a salary of €57,500 when you multiply €250 x 230.

On average, a Contractor will earn €10,000 more than their permanent counterpart, so work this into your rate. If you are currently earning a salary of €50,000 in a permanent role, you should benchmark yourself at €260 per day – equating to €60,000.

Taxation: As a self-employed Contractor you may be pleasantly surprised at the range of business expenses allowable. Ask your accountant for details on this. On average, a Contractor pays Tax at the rate of approx. 22% versus the permanent rate of 42%. This will give you another lift in your take-home pay.

Training: As a Contractor, a client is paying for your skills and experience. It is unlikely that they will provide further training to you. There will always be a settling in period where you become familiar with their systems, so beware not to take on contract work if you cannot fulfil the duties of the role.

Holidays: As a Contractor, you only get paid for the days you work. This is why we calculate your rate by 230 days. You need to factor this in when planning your personal time and holidays. You won’t get paid for this time or bank holidays, assuming you don’t work on these days.

Getting Paid: You need to invoice September Consulting (Recruiters Trading Name) at the end of every month. Your accountant can generate the invoice for you or provide advice on same. Your invoice must be accompanied by signed timesheets. The timesheet must be paid by your manager. This authorises us to pay you. Recruiters pay on invoice, ensuring prompt payment for you.
