‘I knew it was time to come back to Ireland’

“Control your own destiny or someone else will” - Jack Welch

When I landed in Sydney airport during December of 1999 little did I know that the next 17 years of my professional life were going to be mapped out in the world of recruitment and training. I’ve been very lucky over the years with the people I’ve worked with, the clients I’ve consulted and the candidates I’ve represented. So many of these people have become friends and that’s one of the things that has given me great job satisfaction over the years. Sure, my motivators are different now than they were in 2000, but then again, so am I.

In November 2016, I knew it was time to come back to Ireland after all these years away. It was a big decision from a personal point of view and I knew I needed to make sure that I made the right decision when it came to a future employer. Over the years, I’d worked for two of the biggest recruitment companies in the world. With shareholders to answer to they were unforgiving, relentless in the drive to maximise profit, competitive and very demanding in terms of work-life balance. I loved it.

I learned so much and can honestly look back and say two things with absolute certainty with regards to my professional career:

One of the best decisions I ever made was joining these tier one agencies.
One of the best decisions I ever made was deciding to leave!

Why? I knew that I wanted to work for a smaller boutique-type agency where you were properly consulting to clients and candidates. Quality over quantity and away from the KPI-driven world that is great and essential for new/trainee consultants but not for professionals with experience and the knowledge of how to manage their time effectively. This is one of the reasons I came to work at RECRUITERS.

Ironically, I had actually come into the office to register for a contract recruitment role with one of RECRUITERS’ big IT clients. From the moment I walked through the doors on Leeson Street I was impressed with the environment, then the people I met and finally their values matched up to mine and what I found important within the recruitment sector.

I mentioned above that my motivators are different now than they were back in 2000 and that is true, but the one thing that’s never changed is my need to work in a good environment, which is team-orientated with common goals and (very importantly) an ability to have a laugh. You get all this and a lot more at RECRUITERS.

They say your gut is never wrong and it reminded me of one of the best pieces of advice I got from an old manager in Australia, “Always trust your gut.” he told me.

So I did. And I started with RECRUITERS in January 2017 head up the finance team. I’m already looking to bring in a senior consultant to head up our financial services division and we’ve hired two other consultants as well. Exciting times.

Control your own destiny.
