A brief history of Ireland's musical doorway

Based in the heart of Dublin City Centre, NCH is Ireland’s National Cultural Institution for Music hosting in excess of 1,000 events each year. World-class music and entertainment for all ages are at the heart of its offering, enriching people’s lives through music and the magic of live performance. It is proud to be home to the National Symphony Orchestra along with Music Network, Music Generation, Chamber Choir Ireland, Irish Baroque Orchestra and Crash Ensemble are resident at the NCH.

The NCH, as we know it today, opened its doors on the 9th of September 1981, though the site’s association with music goes back more than a century before that. A concert venue, created for The International Exhibition held on Earlsfort Terrace in 1865, continued to operate after the Guinness family acquired the buildings in 1871.

Following multiple different uses including a University campus, in 1978, following the commitment made by the government four years earlier, work began on developing the site of the National Concert Hall. Since it opened, the NCH has hosted some of the world’s greatest orchestras, conductors and soloists from all over the world.

In 2018 Ireland’s National Symphony Orchestra, which was formerly under the auspices of the national broadcaster RTÉ, came under the management of the NCH. The same year, the Irish Government approved a significant investment which will see the National Concert Hall take its place among the world’s greatest concert halls, providing a home to creators, educators and practitioners of every style and aspect of music, domestic or international, contemporary or traditional.

Two key strategic projects which will drive the realisation of its vision are the multi-million euro plans to redevelop the NCH on Earlsfort Terrace as part of Project Ireland 2040, along with the Government’s decision to transition the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) under the remit of the NCH. This transition elevates the standing of both the NCH and NSO, and enhances capabilities in relation to performances, education and outreach activities.

The NCH Development Plan: Reimagining the Future

The redevelopment plan for the National Concert Hall has been described as both a ‘once-in-a-generation’ refurbishment, and the ‘largest development project ever undertaken on a national cultural institution’.

The redevelopment plans include the restoration and protection of historic buildings, some of which have not been used or maintained since before Independence. It includes expanding the stage and seating capacity of the main auditorium, adding up to 1500 m2 and 225 new seats. It means making the NCH universally accessible so that people of all abilities can appreciate, participate and contribute.

It covers over 16,000m2, with the NCH embracing, encompassing and appropriating under-used and unused rooms and halls, to create rehearsal spaces, study areas, libraries, studios and lounges. It means the future-proofing of our National Cultural Institution for Music. It includes a dedicated rehearsal hall for the NSO, for the first time in its history, in what was the medical library of the university. It includes an all-new 500-seat recital hall.

Super management team that have your back no matter what. Friendly atmosphere. You get to work at various performances and events. You will gain friends for life and find it very difficult to leave.

NCH aspires to reflect what is new and best in Irish cultural life and that drives its aim for greater diversity and inclusivity in all activities. Developing new and innovative ways of giving life to its values is crucial to this role so that NCH can develop into an inclusive, accessible, high-performance, values-led organisation culture.

It could also be the most exciting workplace you’ll ever experience.
