RECRUITERS Cleans Ireland Coasts

The importance of our oceans

Restoring ecosystems like oceans and forests play a critical role in mitigating climate change. Oceans are one of the earth’s greatest defenses against climate change, but they are also one of its greatest victims.

According to Marine Biodiversity Ireland, an astonishing 50-80% of the world's oxygen is produced by the ocean's ecosystems.

Threats to our marine biodiversity

In Ireland, we are fortunate to have a spectacular coastline and a vast marine territory that stretches out over 200 nautical miles past our landmass. But it's under threat by human action (and inaction).

Sources of marine litter Ireland

According to marine biodiversity in Ireland, two of the major threats to our marine environments are:

  1. Pollution and run-off from untreated sewage, litter, fertilisers, pesticides, and industry.
  2. Marine litter causing harm to wildlife by entanglement, suffocation, ingestion, and habitat degradation.

RECRUITERS cleans up

To tackle these threats and to make a tangible and immediate improvement to the coastal environment, RECRUITERS registered and actively collaborates in Clean Coasts Corporate Volunteering Program

This involves our team going out to beaches and waterways across Ireland and actively cleaning them up one piece of rubbish at a time. It's a simple but effective way of volunteering our time to protect one of the earth’s greatest defenses against climate change.

Clean Coasts are an incredible organisation that engages businesses and communities in the protection of Ireland's beaches, seas and marine life. Read more about them >

With your continued support, the RECRUITERS team can continue to clean Ireland's coasts and waterways and advocate the importance of doing so to all Irish businesses, particularly those we work with. All businesses have a responsibility to drive ocean sustainability as part of our responsibility to keep global warming below 1.5C.

It's now or never

"Some government and business leaders are saying one thing but doing another. Simply put, they are lying. And the results will be catastrophic," Mr Guterres said in a video message released at the same time as the UN report RTE investigates.

According to the same article, humanity has less than three years to halt the rise of planet-warming carbon emissions and less than a decade to slash them almost in half, the UN said in a landmark report on stopping global warming and ensuring a "liveable future".

We continually encourage our clients and all employers to get involved. If you would like your company to get more involved, here are some benefits of you doing so:

  • Make a practical and positive impact on the coastal environment & waterways
  • Learn about Ireland’s extensive coastline and freshwater systems
  • Understand the effect that marine litter has on our environment
  • Get more engaged with our local community
  • Survey biodiversity and assist with citizen science projects
  • Help to restore fragile dune systems
  • Have a fun team building day while contributing to a worthwhile coastal conservation initiative

Small changes with big impacts

We can address these issues and make small changes in our everyday lives to reduce our impact on the ocean and its inhabitants.

Here are a few ways you can make a change thanks to Clean Coasts Ireland:

1. GET CLEANING:

Divert litter away from harming wildlife and degrading habitats by removing it from our coastal and inland environments. The Clean Coasts programme encourages individuals and groups to register as a Clean Coasts Group to remove litter in your local area.

Groups can also adopt an area to focus on litter management and ongoing care. Clean Coasts grants scheme helps to support Clean Coasts Groups with environmental and improvement projects in their adopted areas.

If becoming a Clean Coasts Group doesn’t suit you, you can pledge to do a #2minutebeachclean to spend two minutes removing litter from our coast as you are out and about!

2. BREAK UP WITH PLASTIC:

We can help by reducing the amount of single-use plastics and packaging we buy. Why not start by identifying three plastic items that you could reduce or replace with eco-friendly alternatives? Find some tips here.

3THINK BEFORE YOU FLUSH:

We need to avoid flushing harmful items such as sanitary products, wipes and cotton buds to reduce our impact on the ocean. Find out more here.

4. THINK BEFORE YOU POUR:

Pouring fats, oils and grease (FOGS) down the drain can lead to blockages and overflows of sewage, causing damage to habitats and harming aquatic species. We can use a sink strainer to collect food before it goes down the sink and we can get rid of FOGs by letting them cool in a container and putting them in the compost or general waste bin. Find out more here.

5LEARN ABOUT THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT AND ITS INHABITANTS:

As the famous diver and explorer Jacques Cousteau once said “people protect what they love” so if you submerge yourself in the marine environment and learn about its inhabitants, you’re more likely to want to help to protect it! You can learn about the coastlandseashoreseabed and marine water bodies on Clean Coasts habitat pages.
